In finder, press command comma for preferences. Interact with the tool bar and click advanced. The option should be available in this screen. For the life of me, I will never understand why windows and the mac default to not showing these. Without showing the extensions, it can be impossible to tell what kind of file you are dealing with.

I would like to unhide file extensions. I cannot remember how to do this.
