Ray, Sorry, on lunch now so can look at MacVisionaries stuff. While Mail is in Normal view, not Classic that is, these are the steps:
1. Stop Interacting with everything. 2. Navigate to the Vertical Splitter just to the right of the Messages Column Group. 3. Press VO-cmd-f5 to make sure the Mouse Pointer is focused correctly. 4. Double-click on the trackpad. Make sure it is a double-click, not just a double-tap. That's all that really needs done. The VO-cmd-f5 is necessary as the Mouse Pointer doesn't always make it to the correct spot without that bit of encouragement. You can confirm that the Preview pane is disabled by doing the following. • Stop Interacting with everything. • Navigate right past the Messages Column Group. VO should announce Vertical Splitter, then Horizontal Splitter. If it says something about Messages Content, then it didn't work. Try the simulated Mouse double-click (VO-shift-space-space) instead of the trackpad mouse-click if it is giving you too much grief. I just tested this on 10.8.4 and it worked as it should. Later...
