Thanks muchly for the tips. I didn't know the mail activity hotkey. That's great to have.
I decided I had to trim the monster mailbox down to give mail a chance to be able to function at all so I've been experimenting with folder searches saved into smart folders where I can delete or move as required and it seems to be helping. I've gotten rid of 3 or 4 thousand so far but have a long way to go. turns out it was still downloading and there were 65000 messages when it had finished.. I'm frankly amazed mail can function at all with this. Windows would have pooped itself to death way before this. <smile>. Thanks again. Danny.
