Thanks all for the responses. Using the function keys works perfectly, so thanks for that. Not sure what was going on in the display preferences. I've known screen brightness to have unusual effects on seemingly unrelated things before, so thought it might be something like that. Anyway, here's to longer battery life! Cheers, Nic
