HI Christina, I have both Nisus Writer Pro and Pages, but I have not used Pages that much. I found Pages a little complicated and confusing. I have unfortunately not yet taken Anne's course, which I hope to do someday, but if I did I'm sure this would resolve many of the issues I have with Pages.
That said, my impression is that Nisus Writer Pro is simpler and easier to use than Pages. For instance, I like the fact that I can simply highlight text and then use the VO-SHIFT-M keystroke to change the formatting, mark it as a heading, add it to the table of contents etcetera. It also seems simpler to me for adding footnotes. VoiceOver seems to misbehave a bit for me when I try to add footnotes in Pages. Not so with Nisus. Those are just my impressions though.
