here is what i do; i copy and paste photos into the photos folder in finder.  I 
go to the second level below photos that says pictures.  if the images are in 
either of these folders then mars can find them.  in earlier versions of mars 
edit you could access your entire hard drive, but for some reason they changed 
it.  i have since gotten in the habit of putting all my photos in the folder i 
mentioned earlier.  i don't care for iPhoto and only use it to create the 
occasional slide show.  best of luck, max
