Hi, I'm guessing that the items were put in the Trash when the Thumb Drive was connected to a different system. If that's the case, then the Trash is linked to the other machine so you do not have permission to empty it. The easiest way to fix this is to copy the items that you wish kept from it over to your Mac, then use Disk Utility to format it. You can then copy the items back over and you'll have the full amount of space available.
