While I haven't tried this you supposedly can do the following two commands in the terminal to enable hidden files in the finder:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder

After that the finder should show everything. Ditto on the aforementioned caveats.

Unless you use a Utility like Invisiblix, this is only possible using the Terminal. I'm not sure about the accessibility of Invisiblix as I've never used it but a search on the web claims that it is a utility that will accomplish this without using Terminal. A couple of things to note, even if you do make the Trash item visible, you will not be able to get rid of those locked items without either being logged in as root or using the Terminal. Also, the usual caution is necessary, these files are hidden for a reason, manipulating the wrong hidden file can cause some pretty big problems.
