Yes, you must eject the disk. Navigate to the sidebar, find the drive (it will likely be called "no name"), and hit cmd-e.
There are a few different view options. I like column view (cmd-3 in any Fionder window), but play with the different options to find the one that suits you best. When you settle on one, find your hard drive in the sidebar, hit cmd-j to open the viewing options, select your preference, and make sure to check the box to apply to all subfolders. There's no universal view preference, so that is the best you can do. Just hit enter if you have no password and the Mac should log you in. There's no way I know of to avoid this, unless you set your account to be the default login one and disable the password prompt entirely. You can set all that up in the "users and groups" section of System Preferences.
