Sure. In terminal, you can type this, exactly as it's written and iCloud won't be the default location. defaults write NSGlobalDomain NSDocumentSaveNewDocumentsToCloud -bool false And press enter. Then, exit terminal and when you re-launch text edit, you'll have your local drive as primary location. Of course, you'll still be able to save to iCloud, it just won't be the first option to save to anymore.
