I accidentally added the PPP Modem icon when I actually wanted to add the User icon so my folders would be up there. So in both cases I want to add and remove items supplied by the mac itself. I understand that 3rd party ones would be entirely different animals. To add one it said I needed to find it in the finder and then double click on it. I thought I did. to remove it I'm supposed to hold command and drag it. But I can't seem to make that happen either.
