I don't know how much this relates to your problem with finder, but I cannot use it in column view with Mavericks. Much as you described, I just get a "Busy" warning the second I do something like, say, type in characters to skip to a certain file I want to access. The workaround that I'm using for now is switching to list view instead. I am thinking your window theory may have some merit.
