I use mouse keys a lot, which you can enable in the accessibility dialog, command-option-f5. I put the mouse pointer on the horizontal slider, then pressed the 0 key on the keypad, pressed and held right arrow till VO began reading something else, then pressed the period key to release the mouse. You have to have mouse keys on for this. You can also try toggling mouse keys by pressing option key five times quickly. There’s usually a little mouse-click sound, and VO will indicate the status of the toggle.
