If you are in List View (cmd-2), hit cmd-down arrow. In Column View (cmd-3), 
just hit right arrow. Note that Column View does not work well in Mavericks and 
may cause Finder to become busy for quite a long time. Just so you know, 
vo-shift-down arrow interacts with whatever Voiceover is focused on, which is 
useful for many things, but Finder is usually not one of them. The only way I 
can see interaction being used in Finder is to review how a file or folder name 
is spelled.
