Emojis are a font where each letter is an icon of some sort. They
originated in Japan where, I assume, it was an easy transition from
Japanese pictograph type of writing to a font that lets you also write
with pictures. For example, here is an Emoji of a horse, if it comes
through the email system ok:

Apparently Apple's support for Emoji are quite good. You can read about
that here:

The funny thing is that, as symbols you can use them for anything you
would use regular text. So on the above wikipedia page they link the
horse icon to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/π΄
where the last character is the "horse" emoji. You can even use them to
name files or put them in passwords although I have no idea how you
would type that. So you could name a file:
πππ
Which is Eye Heart Tomato (if I copied things right).
