Hi there This doesn't solve the problem about making inadvertent changes, but believe it or not, you can actually put a braille file in numbers. This has a great effect which I like. It takes out the carriage returns at the Inn of the lines. It puts little dots for spaces in the places. Like paragraph indentions, but I find this to be pretty minor.
You can make a transformation in text edit to take out the capitalization so that you don't have the dots seven and eight up. To do that you select all the text go to the edit menu and go down to transformations and choose make lowercase. This does not mess up a BRF file in so far as taking out all capitalization because.6 is the capitals of course. I think there is a way, and I haven't looked at it lately, that you can tell TextEdit not to edit a file. Of course, you can make a copy of a file before you start reading with it, so if you do happen to make changes you can just copy the file back to your computer. That might be a good backup just in case.
