Deer List, got my enhanced voices installed. what is the best way to update with voice over? When you go to software update on IOS it says you have IOS 7.04 your software is up to date but on the mac it takes you to the ap store. Do you have to get all your OSX Updates through the ap store? If so its going to b a pain to find it among all the updates for applications as I am more bothered about keeping my system software up to date than anything else. I updated today but needed sighted assistance as it just kept saying system dialog but vo did not seem to have access to it. I can’t enable my firewall it says firewall is turned off, but the turn on button is dimmed. Any suggestions would be gratefully received. Does anyone have any advice regarding an accessible third party firewall / security software? I know the consensus is that you don’t need any but call me a windows paranoiac. How do you set a home page in safari? When focus is on the selected tab going along the bottom of the screen,how do you get to the information in that tab? On IOS you just move your finger up the screen.

In the Speech pane of VO Utility, in the Voices tab, activate the Default Voice pop-up. 2. Choose the Customize option. 3. Interact (VO-shift-down arrow) with the table of voices. 4. Navigate through the list pressing VO-space to check the voices you wish to download. If the voice is already available to you, it will already say “So and so, Checked”. 5. After you have all the voices you wish checked, stop interacting with the table (VO-shift-up arrow) then navigate right to the OK button. 6. If you go back to the Default Voice pop-up, activate it, then arrow through or VO-up or VO-down arrow through. The one that is presently downloading should say “Downloading” and the ones that are in the Queue will say “Waiting” after announcing the name. 7. Just leave your computer open and they will download. They might take quite a while as the voices seem to come from a slower server. As a matter of interest, I started some downloading at work this afternoon, did some other things, closed my MBP and came home. I checked on them while writing this message and they seem to have finished downloading. I now have them all in my list of available voices from the Default Voices pop-up. You may also like to note that there is a quick method of changing the voice on the fly. Press VO-cmd-left or right arrow. As you go left or right, you’ll hear “Intonation, Rate, Pitch, Volume and Voice” from which you can hold the same keys down then use the up and down arrows to change things. Later… Side-note: I noticed that when I chose a few of these new voices, they played for the demo but did not actually work properly for other tasks. I’ll have to dig a little deeper to see what’s going on. Maybe it had something to do with stopping and starting of the download process, or maybe I just need to restart my beast. 5. If you press VO-space (VO means ctrl-optio) on the Default Voice pop-up then arrow down through the list, after Customize, VO will read more voices and will say “So and so Downloading” if a voice is being downloaded at that time. I believe that it only downloads one voice at a time and will continue downloading voices even when the VO Utility is not open. Once the voice has completed downloading, you are able to choose it as your default. When you choose Customize and navigate through the table of additional voices, you can press VO-space to check as many voices as you wish to add to your system. Once you’ve got all the voices checked that you want, stop interacting with the table and navigate to the OK button then press it. As I mentioned above, you can use that process to determine which voices are downloading and, eventually, they should all be added to your system. Regarding how to wake your MBA, just open the lid and it awakens. You’ll likely need to press return or tap once on the trackpad to bring focus to the authentication window where you can enter your password. When you select to change the default voice does that mean you can only download one voice because only one can be the default? What is happening here is that there are 2 levels of function keys. By default they are hardware controls i.e. volume and brightness. So by pressing Function key + VO + F8 will get you there. The Function is next to the VO keys. Thus you just need to hold the bottom left-hand 3 keys and then press F8 and let go.
