This doesn't sound like any problem with Mail preferences or System Preferences. It is a known issue with gMail on Mavericks. Apple is working on a fix, but who knows ho long before they really fix it. If you want more information on it, a Google search is bound to bring up plenty of results. Cheers, Nic
