In case it is helpful, the function of the power on/off button under
Maverick has changed somewhat. When you press it once quickly, it puts
your mac to sleep. If you want to call up the shut down dialogue, you
have to hold it down for 3 to 4 seconds for the dialogue to come up.
This is very confusing to start with but once you get used to it, it
works like a charm.
