Depends on the view. In Column View, use cmd-down to open a folder, and cmd-up to close it. In List View, use right arrow to open it and left arrow to close it (sometimes you'll need to hit it twice). I don't recommend the other two Finder views if you are a Voiceover user. also, Voiceover can sometimes cause Finder to hang in List View in the current version of Mavericks.
