It is a way to make a mailbox based on rules, just like a smart folder in 
Finder or a smart playlist in iTunes. For instance, you could group all 
messages from certain people into a mailbox, or all messages before a given 
date that contain certain words in the subject, and so on. It is sort of like 
message rules, except instead of taking action on the messages, it simply 
groups them into one mailbox. I don't use them because I prefer server-based 
rules, but if you use Mail on your Mac a lot and don't care about not having 
the same groupings on iOS or other IMAP-enabled programs, they can be very 
useful. In fact, iOS may sync them, I'm honestly not sure.
