Okay, thanks. Oddly, erasing it seemed to take not even a second but the OSX 
installer reports 498.8 gb free, so I guess it must have worked. Have I 
mentioned how great it is that this whole process is fully accessible? I needed 
sighted help to boot into my thumb drive with Mavericks on it, but even then I 
guess I could have used the Startup Disk setting. Go Apple!
