Hello Lee,

In the Finder, press Cmd-Comma to open the Finder preferences and go to the 
toolbar which is always at the top left of the window. Select General and stop 
interacting with the tool bar. Navigate right until you hear "Show these items 
on the desktop:", then check the check boxes for the items you wish to see on 
your desktop. Then press Cmd-w to close the window.
