Hi,

Normally, you can still update on battery.  Apple just recommends that you have 
it plugged in in case it dies in the middle of the update.  If you're above 50% 
and have a battery that's in good shape, then you'll be fine.  The only updates 
that specifically require the power be plugged in is your firmware updates and 
other base system sorts of updates.
