Hello all, good news I have finally fixed it.
What I had to do and now that I remember doing before the update was to go into 
the view menu and selected collapse all conversations. Strange but there you go.
Actually, I prefer doing this because then for me I don't get confused if a lot 
of messages come through. I can then expand the conversation if I see fit and 
VO J down the list and when I'm done close the conversation and delete it.
