The FC4 kernel being used appears to have been the ultimate culprit.
Updating this laptop to the 2.6.15-1.1831_FC4 kernel (at least on this
laptop) solved the issue. The card is now recognized correctly, and more
importantly, the ath0 device is now correctly created and usable.
