Comment (by [EMAIL PROTECTED]):

If you remove the debugging commands, the above configuration results in a
working (at least in the short term) link. Here is a multiple link
 configuration:

 {{{
 auto ath0
 iface ath0 inet static
         address 1.0.0.0
         netmask 255.255.255.255
         broadcast 255.255.255.255
         pre-up /sbin/modprobe ath-pci autocreate=none
pre-up wlanconfig ath0 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode ap
pre-up wlanconfig ath1 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode wds
         pre-up iwconfig ath0 essid backhaul
         pre-up iwpriv ath1 wds_add 00:02:6f:20:f7:2b
         pre-up iwpriv ath1 wds 1
         pre-up ifconfig ath1 up
         pre-up ifconfig ath0 up
         pre-up iwconfig ath0 channel 161
         up brctl addif br0 ath0
         up brctl addif br0 ath1
         down brctl delif br0 ath0
         down brctl delif br0 ath1
         post-down wlanconfig ath0 destroy
         post-down wlanconfig ath1 destroy

 auto ath2
 iface ath2 inet manual
pre-up wlanconfig ath2 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode wds
         pre-up iwpriv ath2 wds_add 00:0b:6b:4c:b8:d5
         pre-up iwpriv ath2 wds 1
         pre-up ifconfig ath2 up
         up brctl addif br0 ath2
         down brctl delif br0 ath2
         post-down wlanconfig ath2 destroy

 auto ath3
 iface ath3 inet manual
pre-up wlanconfig ath3 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode wds
         pre-up iwpriv ath3 wds_add 00:0b:6b:36:d1:46
         pre-up iwpriv ath3 wds 1
         pre-up ifconfig ath3 up
         up brctl addif br0 ath3
         down brctl delif br0 ath3
         post-down wlanconfig ath3 destroy
 }}}

That doesn't explain the kernel panic.

Also, it isn't at all clear why these configuration commands are so
sensitive to ordering. In particular the apparent need to bring up ath1
before ath0. They should not be so sensitive to ordering, or at least the
specific ordering requirements should be more clearly documented.
