#778: upgrading madwifi, ubuntu breaks wireless on thinkpad

Wireless is a disaster on a new Thinkpad (the Z60t) with several recent
Linux kernels (e.g., current Ubuntu kernel 2.6.15-26-686) and several
recent madwifi versions (e.g., wlan: 0.8.4.2 (svn r1687), ath_pci:
0.9.4.5 (svn r1687)).
Specifically, DHCP to a hub sitting ten centimeters away is successful
but only a small fraction of ping packets to the hub receive a response;
I expect every packet to receive a response. DHCP to farther-away hubs
receives no response; I expect it to pick up an IP address.
The problem here is not with the hardware, and the problem here is not
with the hubs. Wireless works fine on the same machine with madwifi svn
1518 under Ubuntu's not-up-to-date kernel 2.6.15-21-686. Something has
regressed either in the kernel or in madwifi.
What tools are available for debugging wireless problems?
