I then scan for the access point from my laptop: it does not show up.

However, ifconfig now shows some packets received by wifi0:

 wifi0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-14-A5-04-C9-99-50-86-00-00-00-00-
 00-00-00-00

           RX bytes:750 (750.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
           Interrupt:11 Memory:f8900000-f8910000

 ath0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:14:A5:04:C9:99
           inet addr:192.168.2.1 Bcast:192.168.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
           inet6 addr: fe80::214:a5ff:fe04:c999/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
           RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
           TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
           collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
           RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)

A few such packets come in every time I run "iwlist scan" on the (remote)
 laptop.

dmesg is silent through all this.

This hardware configuration has worked in the past with ubuntu dapper's
 madwifi-old.

This morning, I got the card working---with some 2.6.17 kernel and some
recent madwifi version, I do not know exactly---but I have never
reproduced that success, which only happened one time while I was invoking
 all sorts of wireless-configuration commands.
