Can not reproduce the problem. The following works fine for me on Debian
Sarge, kernel 2.6.8-2-386, MadWifi 0.9.2, AR5006XS:

I'm too lazy to type the output of {{{iwconfig ath0}}} off of the other
screen, but it works fine here.
However, I've noticed that if the card has been set to 11g (for example)
before, had the old VAP destroyed and a new one in AP mode created, the
VAP was set to 11g. Issuing {{{iwpriv ath0 mode 11a}}} reported no error,
but {{{iwconfig ath0}}} still said the card was in 11g. After {{{ifconfig
ath0 up}}} the mode was displayed correctly by iwconfig. Maybe an
additional {{{iwconfig ath0 channel 0}}} after changing the mode and
before bringing the interface up works.
Bottom line: cannot reproduce the problem, no comments on this issue for
several months, so I'm closing the ticket for now. Feel free to reopen it
if the issue is still there.
