Comment (by ksc):

 I have only 1 key setup (doesn't matter whether it is 40bit or 104bit,
 same results) and the tx key is 1 also.
 Here's my /etc/network/interfaces file
 {{{
 auto ath10
 iface ath10 inet static
         address 10.17.0.2
         netmask 255.255.255.0
         post-down wlanconfig ath10 destroy
         up /usr/bin/startwep
         #up iwconfig ath10 key xxxxxxxxxx
         pre-up wlanconfig ath10 create wlandev wifi0 wlanmode adhoc
         pre-up iwconfig ath10 essid "myssid" mode Ad-Hoc channel 165 rate
 auto rts off frag off
 }}}

 and here's the content of startwep (I've shrinked it to a one-liner for
 debugging purposes)
 {{{
 #!/bin/bash
 iwconfig ath10 key xxxxxxxxxx
 }}}

 here's what "iwlist ath10 key" shows for both systems
 {{{
 ath10     3 key sizes : 40, 104, 128bits
           4 keys available :
                 [1]: xxxx-xxxx-xx (40 bits)
                 [2]: off
                 [3]: off
                 [4]: off
           Current Transmit Key: [1]
           Security mode:restricted
 }}}

 I'm definately sure that both sets are setup with the same keys. So before
 the 2 sets are connected, "iwconfig ath10" shows
 {{{
     ...
     Link Quality=0/94 Signal level=-95 dBm Noise level=-95 dBm
     ...
 }}}

 ..and after the 2 sets are connected, both shows something like
 {{{
     ...
     Link Quality=33/94 Signal level=-95 dBm Noise level=-95 dBm
     ...
 }}}

 But when I start ping-ing them there's no response until I manually set
 the key off. The strange thing is that if I change the
 /etc/network/interfaces to this...
 {{{
     ...
     #up /usr/bin/startwep
     up iwconfig ath10 key xxxxxxxxxx
     ...
 }}}

 on both systems, the ping works. This only occurs in Ad-hoc mode. Once I
 change 1 set to be "master" and the other as "sta", and do a reboot, the
 ping is running ok..
