New description:

 Trying to bring up madwifi interface in Fedora 5, works fine on managed
 with this configuration:
 {{{
 DEVICE=ath0
 BOOTPROTO=dhcp
 ONBOOT=yes
 DHCP_HOSTNAME=
 IPADDR=
 DOMAIN=
 NETMASK=
 HWADDR=
 USERCTL=no
 IPV6INIT=no
 PEERDNS=yes
 TYPE=Wireless
 ESSID=nuni
 CHANNEL=1
 MODE=Managed
 RATE=Auto
 }}}
 and gives the above error ( Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) )
 for ad-hoc:
 {{{
 DEVICE=ath1
 BOOTPROTO=none
 ONBOOT=yes
 DHCP_HOSTNAME=
 IPADDR=10.0.0.1
 DOMAIN=
 NETMASK=
 HWADDR=
 USERCTL=no
 IPV6INIT=no
 PEERDNS=yes
 TYPE=Wireless
 ESSID=changuito
 CHANNEL=1
 MODE=Ad-Hoc
 RATE=Auto
 }}}

Comment:

 Looks like a set of scripts that are not yet fully compatible with
 madwifi-ng. They seem to try to change the operating mode of an existing
 VAP via "iwconfig ath0 mode ...", which is not supported by current
 MadWifi versions.

 This is no bug, but a known "limitation". It is planned to make changing
 of VAP operation mode via iwconfig working again in the future, but for
 now it must be done as [http://madwifi.org/wiki/UserDocs/ChangingMode
 described here].
