I think that Edgy kernel is patched with madwifi already. You need to
either:
* use the modules from Edgy (just remove madwifi modules from
/lib/modules/2.6.17-10-386/net), or
* remove the original modules from Edgy manually, or
* recompile Edgy kernel with in-kernel madwifi turned off, or
* try vanilla (kernel.org) kernel.
