I managed to fix this in hostapd 0.5.5 (debian sarge backport) by adding
an extra line in driver_madwifi.c. It seems that the interface is taken
down when it shouldn't be. After line 1212:
{{{
hapd->driver = &drv->ops;
}}}
I brought the interface up again by adding the following:
{{{
madwifi_set_iface_flags(drv, 1);
}}}
After recompiling, this fixed the problem for me.
