One possible reason 'ath1' is created after changing the MAC address is
because of udev persistent interface naming. Look in /etc/udev/rules.d.
In addition to using 'macchanger' to set the MAC address the 'ip' command
also works:
'ip link set wifi0 address xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx'.
