 This is a reference counting problem where references exist after the
 reference counter reaches zero (i.e. a bug where the reference count was
 not maintained correctly by code holding these references).

 The allocator could change the symptoms, easily.  The allocator that does
 NOT fail is masking the problem.  After the ath_node has been freed,
 subsequent attempts to free the node should cause an oops.  Seems that you
 are getting bad behavior if you got it to work with a different allocator.
