MadWifi failed to initialize the hardware, thus no wifi0. Which explains
why wlanconfig complains. You forgot to mention which card you have, but
my (blind) guess is that you suffer from what is described at lenths in
#1192.

And it seems that you have installed MadWifi and ath5k (or madwifi-old-
openhal) at the same time, which certainly is no good idea.
