New description:
I downloaded the sources, built them, and installed them according to the
directions.
{{{
ath_hal: 0.9.18.0 (AR5210, AR5211, AR5212, RF5111, RF5112, RF2413, RF5413)

}}}
The card seems to be one that is supported:
{{{
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5006EG 802.11
b/g Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)
}}}
But when I try to configure it I get unknown device:
{{{
[EMAIL PROTECTED] madwifi-0.9.3.3]$ wlanconfig ath0 create wlandev wifi0
wlanmode sta wlanconfig: ioctl: No such device
[EMAIL PROTECTED] madwifi-0.9.3.3]$
}}}
{{{
[EMAIL PROTECTED] madwifi-0.9.3.3]$ uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.23.9-85.fc8 #1 SMP Fri Dec 7 15:49:36 EST

[EMAIL PROTECTED] madwifi-0.9.3.3]$
}}}
My hardware is an Acer Aspire 5100 laptop running Fedora 8. When I
originally booted it, it found the wireless (without madwifi!) but then
dropped it for some unknown reason. Everything indicates that madwifi is
the correct driver for it, but I can't get past this problem. When I try
to run config-network-gui, it starts using tens of minutes of CPU time and
never comes up.
Comment:
Please use the [wiki:Support regular support channels] for this request.
You'll find that wifi0 does not exist. The reason for this will be in the
kernel log.
