Take a LiveCD (eg Knoppix or Kubuntu) and remove the ath* and wlan* files
from "/lib/modules/<the kernel, that doesn't work>/net" and restart your
computer.
I also want to know a way, how to prevent the madwifi modules from loading
at boottime, but i don't think it is a madwifi problem and this is not the
place for that.
