I can start/stop the xserver with no problems as long as ath_pci is not
loaded. As soon as I load ath_pci, changing the state of the xserver
between running/non-running will cause all video output to cease requiring
a reboot (Alt-SysRq-R followed by Alt-Ctrl-Del). Note that the fact I can
still tell the system to reboot indicates that it has not hung and that it
is indeed just the video that is no longer working. This occurs even in
single user mode with nothing else loaded.
I get around this by starting the xserver before loading ath_pci and
removing the module before stopping it. This also appears to affect
suspend. I must unload the module before and reload the module after
suspend (though this is probably good practice anyway). Otherwise the
video will be dead upon resuming from suspend.
This is probably the first xorg.conf ever posted in a madwifi bug report:
