 Sorry as a followup: This worked before I installed the nvidia driver, but
 failed after words. I think it had to do with the new kernel. I had to
 make a symlink for the new /build file for the new kernel as I was getting
 a KERNELPATH error:

 ln -s /usr/src/kernels/`uname -r`-i686 /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build
 }}}

 This allowed me to make / make install the patched source again. My module
 still didn't show up so I blacklisted the ath5k module:

 echo "blacklist ath5k" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
 }}}

 Then I rebooted and iwconfig recognized it. Woohoo!
