i ALSO had the same issues with my brand new acer (and the 2nd one i got
after returning the first the day after purchase. What i found is as
follows: 1. my acer worked perfectly out of the box (aspire 4720z ,atheros
ar5007eg, vista 32 home prem.). 2. The only things that changed on my
machine were some auto updates. I uninstalled the update from atheros and
it has worked perfectly ever since. 3. I tested this again when atheros
released a 2nd update (end of march). I installed the update and again
lost connectivity, would be unable to view wirelss devices etc. I again
uninstalled the update (using the windows update utility) and again it
worked perfectly. 4. As counter intuitive as it sounds the updates are
what caused the problems for me and the solution was to uninstall the
atheros updates. Additionally, I have set my updates to be reviewd maually
for all installation options and I never permit any updates from atheros.
It does make sense in a way as it worked perfect b4 the update so it only
stood to reason that it would do so w/o the update. Like I said I've
tested this repeatedly and had the same outcomes every time. And while
they will not publicly admit it, acer tech support confirmed my results
when I walked them through this solution on the phone in a lab situation.
Remeber what works for one does not always work for all. BUt after several
test on two diferent acer 4720z's with the same configs I've attained the
same reults. Meaning it's no coincidence. So if you're still having the
same problems you may want to try what i did and remove all atheros
updates, taking your wireless nic back to the condition it was when you
took it of the box. After all if it doesn't work you can always
reinstalled the updates. My big question now is what to do about sp-1 as
it can not be uninsatlled once complete. I thik I'll just leave alone and
go by the old addage: if it's not broken don't fix it! good luck.
REMEMBER: if this works for you set your auto updates accordingly so it
does not repeat in the future.

the first post above, then doing:

> Funny thing, though: a few days later the card stopped working on Linux
boot, and I couldn't raise it with ifup. I rebooted a few times w/ no
joy. Then I rebooted into Vista, and had no wireless connection there,
either. Also, in Vista, the card light was off. I switched it on
manually, got a connection, rebooted into Linux, and the connection came
right up on boot.

works now. Yay.
