SOLVED.
The issue is apparently with the compiler. This problem occurs when I use
gcc (GCC) 3.4.6 (Gentoo 3.4.6-r2, ssp-3.4.6-1.0, pie-8.7.10), but this
problem goes away when I use gcc (GCC) 4.1.2 (Gentoo 4.1.2 p1.0.2) on the
same machine.
