 I had a similar problem: The error message "unable to load wlan_scan_sta"
 would show when trying "iwconfig ath1 essid Whatever mode Managed".
 The device was certainly working (as kismet could easily find a dozen
 or so networks) but couldn't associate with any of them and
 "wlanconfig ath1 list scan" 's output was empty.

 It turned out that the rt73 driver (installed previously for a Ralink
 USB wifi antenna) had written "wlan* rt73" in /etc/modprobe.d/ralink,
 and that particular line was causing the problem.

 After commenting out the above line, and unloading/reloading the
 ath_pci module, the problem disappeared, everything worked as expected
 and the computer was successfully connected to the internet after a
 few seconds.

 Hope this helps someone out there.
