I am running suse 11.2 with the latest kernel and madwifi download.
The problem was the RFKill switch!! (its a softkey button on the hp's) Couldn't disable it, not even modprobe ath_pci rfkill=0 Finally, I disabled it through HARDWARE. The PCI express mini card needs to have pin #20 taped! (This is similar in function to pin #13 on the older pci cards. as written in: Possible workaround for problems with mini-PCI cards USERDOC) Please attach to the docs. Hope this helps!
