Strongly agreed, and this is what Graham also expressed with his idea of a
/home if we want to provide a home page for existing community members.

I also agree that my mockup's still too wordy and may overload the casual
visitor. However, I think it's important to capture what the communities
swarming around at the moment (to show it's an active community and to provide
context to community information).

Perhaps, then, a hybrid of all of the ideas so far:

  * The buttons from my mockup to take the new
user where they need to be)

  * A very short "About" splash next to them to
let people know if they're on a vaguely
    intersting and/or correct site.

  * A 2/3rds width panel below containing swarm
    info from some[1] source(s).

  * A couple of small portlets from Quim's design
showing community "size" stats: number of
users, garage projects, latest user (I like the
    "welcome J. Bloggs" idea)

[1] Given number of mailing replies may not be sufficient for good SNR on the
swarming, it could be sufficent to have the karmically rated news and most
popular ITT threads from the last 24 hours.

Cheers,

Andrew
