Subject: Re: URGENT! Updating the info for flashing

Seriously, this is all SO confusing (and always has been) for regular (i.e.,
Not dev) users. Regular users should never havek to visit a "download" page,
let alone a wiki page if they don't want to.

[jot] Our Flasher-3.5 tools is dveloper tool only. As I wrote in announcement
(http://maemo.org/news/announcements/maemo_flasher-3-5_tool_final_for_fremantle_and_diablo_released/)
it may be that also technology oriented end-users use them but thery really
are not for regular end user.

[jot] I have proposed that someone should implement very simple GUI (with Qt
or Python so that same GUI works in Linux, Windows and Mac) that I could
include to the instalaltion package. Only after that flasher tools can be
considered as end-user tool.

A CD should be included in the device package that contains installable GUI
"device management" apps for Linux, Windows, and Mac. These apps should have an
auto-update preference (on launch, every week/month/whatever). The app should
not only recognize the current device firmware version, but be able to download
and install a new one if needed. It should also be able to perform the same
bakup/restore functionality that the device does...

[jot] Maybe this (automatic download of image file) could be added to the
flasher GUI... We anyhow have implemented this already for Eclipse IDE (we have
GUI wizard for flasher in Eclipse IDE) so you can check from Eclipse how to
implement that for end users.

I know you all have an iPhone/Pod or have used one before. All of this stuff
should be brainless and require very little documentation at all. Especially,
not documentation about a 770 flasher for Mac, when most new N900 users won't
even know what "770" or "N8xx" (or even "WiMAX") means -- all of this is on the
top of the wiki page.

[jot] No much comments for thie. I am responsible of developer environment but
somebody else is responsible of end-user environment for platform/devices.

Anyway... Just my two cents. And, I know I'm jumping into this conversation
late (or, early, if we start talking about Harmattan).

[jot] A lot can still be done to Fremantle while waiting Harmattan...

Cheers,

//Jarmo

Tim
