Yes, I should have mentioned I've got the ext2 module loaded.  I can mount an ext2 partition on an 512MB MMC card fine, but the 2GB card fails.
 
I've also messed around with the geometry of the card itself, trying everything from 255H/63S/253C to 65H/62S/1012C but still no joy.

Have you checked if the kernel knows about ext2? (cat /proc/filesystems)
If ext2 is not listed (and is not by default on the BETA) you might want
to load the module first :-) (
insmod /mnt/initfs/lib/modules/2.6.16-omap1/ext2.ko )
