The drop was really no big thing, I dropped my other PDAs like various
Palm devices and they never even took a scratch. I don't keep my 770 in
a PDA holder or anything. Like another reader of the list I keep it in
my laptop bag together with other stuff. Anyway my 770 works just fine,
and I was just wondering what was going on. Also could the crack be
related to fast temperature changes?

As has been pointed out previously, this is a well known design flaw and has been discussed at length in the internettablettalk.com forums. The area surrounding the plugs is the only part of the case that is plain old plastic, with no reinforcement. It cracks randomly, and there's no amount of care that you can take with your device to ensure that it doesn't crack. The crack will not spread beyond that little plug area, although some very few folks have reported multiple cracks working in concert to cause a small hole in the case there.

In most instances, the crack will spread from one edge of the plug area to another and stop. It won't affect the functioning or structural integrity of the device, but if you follow up with Nokia, they'll fix/replace it under warranty. I haven't read anything that indicates that replacements are any less likely to crack than the originally shipped units, though.
