I would suppose that that library implements most of the functionality that has ever been achieved conserning linux and phones.(that is getting/sending smses, placing calls, sucking out contacts etc).
I have to say that at least for me, configuring gammu was a major pain. Gnokii was easier but with probably less functionality.

Its using evolution-data-server so it would be the same as accessing
e-d-s from a standard desktop.
http://www.gnome.org/projects/evolution/ would be a starting point.
